SPORT EDITION

Your opponent is not on the other side.

He is at your door at five in the morning, asking whether you really want to go out.

He asks every day. Still asks after twenty years.

The next pages hold fifteen sentences. None of them will make you faster. They are for the days you don't want to go.

Those are the days that decide the season.

Life is no Battle, it's a Game

In preparation

  1. 01

    Discipline beats motivation

Motivation comes and goes. It depends on the weather, on sleep, on the last message on your phone.

Discipline gets up every morning without asking how you feel.

Wait for motivation and you'll train well in July and not at all in November.

  2. 02

    The base is boring

The work that actually carries you looks like nothing. Easy miles, clean reps, again and again.

That is exactly why so few people do it.

The spectacular part comes later. It stands on the boring one.

  3. 03

    Recovery is training

The stimulus happens in the session. The adaptation happens afterwards.

Load without recovery doesn't build you up, it wears you down — slowly enough that you notice it months later.

The rest day is not a compromise. It is part of the plan.

  4. 04

    Technique before strength

Strength on poor technique is just a faster injury.

Going lighter than you could is uncomfortable. Do it anyway.

Clean athletes get old in their sport. And getting old is the one race everybody is in.

  5. 05

    Measure what matters

Not everything countable counts. And no watch measures the important part.

How do you feel the day after? Are you looking forward to the next session? Do you sleep well?

If the numbers rise while the answers get worse, the plan is wrong.

  6. 06

The bad day is part of it

It is not the exception. It is roughly half.

Everyone who lasts has learned to train mediocre on bad days instead of not at all.

    That is the entire trick.

  7. 07

    A setback is information

Not a verdict. Not a statement about you.

The question isn't why it always happens to you. The question is what you do differently next time.

Take setbacks personally and you eventually stop. Read them and you get better.

  8. 08

    Compare yourself to yesterday

There is always someone faster next to you. Even at the very top. It never stops.

The only one you actually lined up against is you, one year ago.

    Everything else is entertainment.

  9. 09

    Your body is listening

The way you talk about it is the way it works.

Tell yourself you're too slow before every session, and the race was decided beforehand.

Talk to yourself the way you'd talk to a training partner you want to keep.

  10. 10

    Competition is repetition

Nothing new happens on the day. What you can't do in training you can't do there either.

So you rehearse more than the movement: waking up, eating, waiting, the nerves.

Rehearse the day twenty times and there is less left to lose.

  11. 11

    Breathe before you push

One breath before the start. One before the last set. One before you answer.

This is not a technique from a workshop. It is the shortest route from tension to control.

Strength out of calm. Never the other way round.

  12. 12

    No goal without a date

„A marathon someday“ is not a goal. It's a wish.

A date turns the wish into a plan, and the plan into a Tuesday evening.

Sign up. After that it starts on its own.

  13. 13

A training partner is the best gear you own

There are days you only go out because someone is waiting.

No shoe, no watch and no plan gets you through the door that reliably.

Find someone slightly better than you. And someone slightly worse.

  14. 14

    Stop before you're broken

The last set never won a season. But it can end one.

The gap between ambitious and stupid is about one rep wide.

Stopping while it's going well is the hardest exercise in the programme.

  15. 15

    Start again

After the injury. After the winter. After the three years when nothing happened.

The first day back is always humbling. It is still only one day.

Start again. As often as it takes.

„A hand to the wrist. One breath. Keep going.“
